Only a short ferry crossing from Tenerife, La Gomera is a totally different island where the pace of life is much slower. This small, round island rises up from the sea with sheer cliffs and steep hillsides leading up to the mist shrouded National Park of Garajonay; a dense mass of woodland with unique fauna and flora crossed by swift mountain streams.

Ravines plunge down to green valleys through little villages, down to the ocean and the occasional small beach. Like most of the Canary Islands the southern coastal region is invariably sunny while inland mountains are often cloudy or enveloped in mistWalking is by far the most popular outdoor activity in La Gomera and, due to the rugged terrain, there are many good walking routes all over the island although some paths are quite steep.

Boat excursions to see the dolphins and view the dramatic rock formations along the coast can be taken from Playa Santiago and Valle Gran Rey. There are tennis courts at the Hotel Jardin Tecina and mountain bikes may be hired in Valle Gran Rey but be prepared to tackle some steep hills.There are only a few beaches, and most are pebbles and black sand. The two main beaches are located at San Sebastian and Playa Santiago, with several small beaches at Valle Gran Rey and on the east coast at Hermigua and La Caleta.La Gomera only has a local airport with a few flights to Tenerife North and Gran Canaria but there is a regular catamaran service linking the island with Los Cristianos in southern Tenerife. We suggest the easiest way to get to La Gomera is to take a morning flight to Tenerife which will allow plenty of time to connect with the afternoon catamaran.
